It’s a buzzword we’ve heard time and time again. Who wouldn’t want to fill their class with students that are happy to enroll, succeed in and out of the classroom, and ultimately graduate to become proud alumni?

But what exactly is fit? Can you define it? If you can, how do you take that information and apply it to students who might be interested in coming to your school? And what about those students that don’t even have you on their radar?

We break down fit into 2 categories - academic and social fit. 

It’s important that a student is happy in and out of the classroom. With so much of a student’s enjoyment and happiness of their college experience coming from their social surroundings and circumstances, it should be a part of every student’s selection process. 

Academic Fit

Academic fit is what pops into most people’s minds. Starting the search process by considering things like majors, programs and internships.

A student should also think about their learning style. Will they be happy in a classroom of 300 or do they prefer a smaller, more intimate classroom size?

Do they like engaging in a breadth of topics or taking a deep dive and passionately discussing and investigating them? 

What about research opportunities and resources? There are different types of learners pursuing different goals with their education, and this should also be accounted for.

Will a student enjoy your campus culture and values, and feel a sense of belonging?

Some are after different extracurricular activities or student organizations. One person may be interested in joining a fraternity or sorority and attending major sporting events, and others may have absolutely no interest in that.

And what about social life? There are things to consider like campus setting, what do students do for fun, and even includes things like religious preferences. 

Do they want to spend their weekends attending concerts, hiking or shopping? The surrounding community may or may not have an influence on a student’s day-to-day activities. Do they prefer to be surrounded by a plethora of restaurants and shops or a more agricultural environment?
